NCSO attempted to stop a black Nissan Maxima on Highway 64 East near 301 on Thursday 5/27 around noon.
The driver was slow to stop and then decided to take off and elude the deputy.
The chase went down Benvenue Rd, Hunter Hill Rd, Winstead Ave, and ended on the 64 on ramp going west on 64 at the Winstead Ave interchange.
The driver Matthew Helfer 30, whose address is listed as homeless in Durham, jumped and ran from the vehicle across highway 64 and was subsequently arrested. The passenger, was also taken into custody.
During the investigation they determined that Helfer had just stolen items from Lowes Home Improvement.
Helfer was charged with flee to elude arrest and larceny.
He was placed in Nash County Jail under an $11,000 bond.
His car was seized due to the "run and done law"

Helfer has a history of Obtaining Property by False Pretense, Larceny and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
